A small group of women which calls itself Voice of People has set the ball rolling to educate people on the importance of local civic elections and the role people can play in local elections and working in local wards on local issues.
It recently held a public meeting in Sastri Nagar, Adyar to interact with community leaders and activists. It was well-attended.
A few days ago, the group also met the state governor Vidyasagar Rao to present some 5000 signatures of people who sought a corruption-free government. This campaign was run after a series of events that took place in the AIADMK party following late J Jayalalithaa’s death.
Sandhya Sridhar, a core member of this group and a resident of Besant Nagar says that the group will act like a catalyst to encourage people in each ward, with a focus on the Adyar zone to take an active part in local issues and interact with councillors after the elections take place.
The oft-postponed civic polls are now expected in September.
